Vice Admiralty Court of the Province of New York

Project Description and Selection Policy

The focus of this project is to provide access to the digital surrogates of the Vice Admiralty papers from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in New York. This collection has not been digitized, but is available for on-site research and on microfilm, which is held by NARA New York. Consisting of six letter boxes and three volumes of court minutes.

As the collection is a total of eight boxes, the entire collection will be scanned starting first with the five boxes of case materials. Some of the documents have been encapsulated in lamination, which has now permanently altered the physicality of the documents. Other materials in the collection are very fragile and may be damaged during handling and scanning. Depending upon the advice of the archivist digital photographs may be taken of these items in an attempt to reduce possible deterioration.
