Urbanization of Manhattan's Upper West Side

Project Director: Shanley Peterson

Source of Materials: New York Historical Society, Landmarks Preservation Commission, Museum of the City of New York, and New York Public Library.

This site will comprise maps, photos, etchings, journal entries, posters, meeting minutes, and other relevant documents from various collections to illuminate the history behind the landmarks and ornate buildings of Manhattan's Upper West Side neighborhood. An interactive map of the Upper West Side dating from the prime period of urbanization (1870-1910) will allow users to virtually tour the neighborhood and click on sites of interest (eg, the Dakota, Riverside Park, Grant's Tomb) to view related digitized archival selections.
