Tagging Guidelines W Examples

Reagan's Cold War

The ReagansColdWar.org archive & exhibit features text documents (printed documents & newspaper articles, as well hand-written diaries & letters), video (archival footage & interviews), and still imagery (photographs & political cartoons). All text l be tagged with basic TEI structure, and video & stills will be tagged using a set modeled on Dublin Core Metadata Element Set — though paired down and/or unique relevant to the specific medium.

Printed documents tagged as follows:

*For all media types the search term subject is to refer to a broad event or issue while the keyword refers to a specific point within a subject.

Government documents will have a title (as determined by project director), date, subject, & source.
Cabinet meeting transcripts will have a title (as determined by project director), date, subject, source, & principals list.
Newspaper articles will have title (original headline), date, source, subject, author, keywords (as determined by project director).

Hand-written documents tagged as follows:

Diary entries will have corresponding transcription and both original & transcript will be tagged w/ date, subject, & keywords.
Letters (both personal & official) will have corresponding transcription and both original & transcript to be tagged w/ date, subject, principals, & keywords (as determined by project director).

Video tagged as follows:

Archival footage will have a title (as determined by project director), date, subject, principals, keywords, source, & rights information.
Interview Broll will have a title (as determined by project director), date, intv. subject, keywords (as determined by project director), source, & rights information.

Still imagery tagged as follows:

Photographs will have a title (original when possible, otherwise as determined by project director), date, photographer, principals, source, & rights information.
Political cartoons will have a title (original author title), date, publication/source, artist/writer, subject (as determined by project director, & rights information.

Text transcription and video encoding goals as follows:

- To allow for searching based on media type (video vs. text doc'), person, subject, author, date, & keyword(s).
- To establish categories to group media by subject, chronology, person(s), type (video vs. photos, etc.)
Detailed taxonomy will also be established.
