Staten Island Environmental And Conservation Movements

Project Director: Steven V. D'Avria
Source of Materials: Various Staten Island groups and Repositories, Including the College of Staten Island, Protectors of Pine Oak Woods, North Shore Waterfront Conservancy, and More.

This project seeks to examine and make available materials pertaining to environmentalism on Staten Island, highlighting specific groups and events throughout its history. Although this is not a well known or explored topic, there is a considerable amount of material, and Staten Island's status as the "greenest" borough in New York City is due to the unheard of efforts of a few people. The image to the right shows some of Staten Island's parks, many of which were created or expanded in an attempt to preserve natural areas on Staten Island.
